Bill Whittle, who retired 25 years ago after 32 years at the Aiken post office, filled in as chief bailiff at the Aiken County Judicial Center when the regular bailiff fell ill. He had never served in court before and soon found himself in the midst of major local cases.
Whittle explains being a bailiff fits retirement and details a nine-person team dividing duties across family civil and criminal courts. They work 30 hours weekly with daily prep starting at 8 a.m. and focus on maintaining court order under the chief bailiff who serves the judge.
