Augusta Obituaries Highlight Wells Lawhead Mathis Services

Mrs. Helen D. Wells of Augusta died March 22 2010 at 82 she was a long time Smoaks Bakery employee and Dallas Heights Baptist Church member. Funeral services are set for March 25 at 2 p.m. at Dallas Heights with interment in Westover Memorial Park. John Jay Walter Lawhead 57 of Aiken died March 21 2010 and will have a memorial service March 25 at 11 a.m. at Aiken First Baptist Church with private interment and Lifeline Foundation donations suggested. Agnes Lucille Mathis 94 of North Augusta died March 23 2010 and will be buried March 25 at Hillcrest Memorial Park with a noon to 1 p.m. visitation at Hatcher Funeral Home. Memorials may go to Kentwood Nursing Home Activities.

South Carolina Man Sentenced for Unregistered Machine Gun

Zollie L. Byrd, 55, was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison by U.S. District Judge Charles Lovell in Helena for possessing an unregistered machine gun. The sentence runs after a four year, three month South Carolina sentence. Byrd was convicted in January 2009 in South Carolina of possession of machine guns.
