The Aiken SERTOMA Club and Aiken Steeplechase Association organize Saturdays Steeplechase with parking programs and concession duties. Greg West, club president, says the event raises money for charity and supports area children. Proceeds go to local charitable causes.
Two members of the Aiken County Planning Commission say they have no immediate plans to resign amid controversy over approving a private academy. The Family Foundation School of New York bought land near Moneta for a grades 7 through 12 program expected to enroll 110 to 250, drawing protests from some community members.
North Augusta Department of Public Safety investigators doubt the Tuesday morning wreck involving a 1985 Pontiac Bonneville was an accident. Vicky Prescott, 43, died after the car left Caroline and Martintown Roads and crashed into LITE 96’s lot. her 15-year-old son survived in stable condition. Police consider the possibility the crash was intentional.
Aiken County Councilman Willar Hightower and Probate Judge Sue Roe seek reelection as Democrats. Rev. Nathaniel Irvin joins a five candidate field in House District 83. Clerk Liz Godard plans reelection filings. deadline is noon March 30 for the June 13 primary with the general election on November 7.
Bath County department leaders say they will not yield territory to Clearwater until a county contract ends. Fire Chief David Cunningham and commissioners Edward Williamson, Frank Jackson and Grady Padgett refuse negotiations and support a public vote for residents to choose between Bath and Clearwater services. The response follows Clearwater officials’ complaint to the Aiken County Council about county assistance.
