Aiken County and 34 other South Carolina counties complete a state mandated reassessment set to raise overall real property values to June 1981 market levels. Tax bills will rise for many owners, though total tax revenue must stay within 1 percent of last year. Notices will follow after March 30 work session.
The 1980 digest outlines reassessment where owner occupied residential property and all other categories are expected to double in assessed value. County assessors report totals for Market Value Sub Total 723 million and Grand Total 1.271 billion including Personal, Manufacturing, and Utility properties.
Inflation rose at a 0.2 percent seasonally adjusted rate in February, the smallest gain since July 1986 and tied to easing gasoline costs and recession. Economists foresee possible slight CPI declines ahead as oil, food supplies remain ample. Deputy White House Press Secretary Speakes calls it good news for Americans.
Aiken's Chick Warner drew attention when quoted in the New York Times on foreign policy. Warner participated in a CBS News New York Times poll and was later sought for comment by a Times reporter.
Cape Canaveral AP Columbia astronauts Jack Lousma and C Gordon Fullerton discussed inspecting chipped heat protection tiles on the nose during a mid day robot arm exercise. NASA officials described the tiles as non critical but engineering curious and the mission proceeding well.
Undercover work by the Aiken County Sheriff's Department leads to 42 drug warrants with more arrests expected. About 30 people have been arrested since February and 11 more over the weekend as raids hit taverns and homes. The operation targets drug sellers with drugs bought and sold on scene. Names of those arrested include Michael James Mitchell and others listed in the report. The crackdown continues under Sheriff Ralph Gunnells with Lt. Paul Lagrow and Chief Deputy Dan Bowe praised for their roles.
President Reagan proposed tax breaks and deregulation to spur investment and create jobs in inner cities and rural towns. The plan would let HUD designate 25 enterprise zones annually with special federal concessions, likened to successful free trade zones in Hong Kong.
