Environmental groups challenge Santee Cooper Florence coal plant

Environmentalists oppose the proposed Santee Cooper coal plant in Florence County near the Great Pee Dee River. The Southern Environmental Law Center filed a DHEC air permit objection, while the Coastal Conservation League cites energy efficiency and Clean Air Act concerns. The plant would use two 660 MW boilers, employ about 100 workers, and could create up to 1,400 construction jobs, pending regulatory approvals.
