Secretary of State Kissinger said he would pursue a breakthrough in Moscow to produce a concrete treaty limiting nuclear weapons by late 1974. He warned relations are in a difficult period as rapid weapons progress slows treaty talks.
House Speaker Carl Albert said he would consider Rep. John Conyers request for equal television time to respond to President Nixon comments about the House Judiciary Committee impeachment inquiry. Conyers accused Nixon of misrepresenting the process in recent news conferences and TV appearances in Chicago and Houston. Hopeland is set to become a 14 acre city park with a 230 pm dedication ceremony. The Iselin Foundation contributed over 60000 toward the 173000 restoration of Hopelands once the home of Mrs. C. Oliver Iselin. Speeches include Sen. Michael Laughlin Robert Martin landscape architect Robert Davidson and Rt Rev Msgr George Lewis Smith. Linda Moody will unveil plaques commemorating Mrs Iselin and her husband. Proceeds from the event support the garden and park improvements in Aiken.
Civil Defense Director L C Greene and State aid aerial survey found about 1.2 million dollars in damages across Aiken County. The tally includes 22 mobile homes destroyed, 15 businesses damaged, two chicken farms spanning 10 to 12 acres, around 20 sheds ruined, and 20 houses damaged with roof loss.
A tentative $120,000 damage estimate was announced for St. Angela Academy after a fire. Classes will relocate to First Baptist Church of Aiken for the rest of the school year with assessments and placement tests moved to Knights of Columbus Hall due to water issues. The tornado aftermath left widespread damage across Aiken County but no deaths or serious injuries.
