Police determined the reported kidnapping of 9-year-old Zane Newton was false. The boy died in an accidental dirt collapse in a field near his Bakersfield home. A second boy fabricated the kidnapping tale to mislead authorities.

Sunny weather is expected to draw a large crowd to Ford Conger Field for the 42nd Aiken Spring Steeplechase. Traffic and gate directions will be signposted with color-coded passes, and officials urge patience as they manage entrances and parking at Wonderhouse and the Aiken Training Track. Parking costs 15 dollars at Wonderhouse and 10 dollars at the Training Track, with residential yard parking prohibited.
Forecasters predict a warm weekend with a high near 78 on Saturday and lows around the 40s. Sunday eases into the low 70s with a slight uptick in rain after 8 p.m. and overnight lows near 39. The mix of sun and clouds continues through Easter.

South Carolina plans to seek federal flexibility under No Child Left Behind to label underperforming schools and target more funding and support. State Superintendent Dr. Jim Rex says the move would refine the system and direct funds to the schools needing the most help. Rex notes over 100 schools currently qualify for technical assistance, with 16 identified as most poorly performing.
High winds tore plastic sheeting from a greenhouse at Aiken High School on Wednesday. Teacher Meghan McPhail and students moved crops to the adjacent structure and secured heaters and roofs to prevent more damage.
