More than 400 parents criticized Ladys Island Middle School administrators after a mass exodus of students fearing gang violence. Forty-nine students signed out. others fled to surrounding woods and were picked up by police. Teachers and parents urged action as knives and weapons were found on campus amid ongoing fights and recent threats.
Karen Papouchado of AMBUCS in Aiken County warned that South Carolina has one of the worst infant mortality records of the 50 states and ranks high globally. The county received a three year grant to improve outcomes focusing on prenatal care, with factors including teen pregnancies and maternal substance abuse highlighted as major contributors.
Governor Carroll Campbell removed Jerre Dixon as Blacksburg mayor after the attorney general ruled her February shoplifting conviction a crime of moral turpitude. Mayor Pro-Tem David Hogue will serve as acting mayor until a special election. Dixon was found guilty of shoplifting a candle and two greeting cards worth 3.54 dollars at a Gaffney Wal-Mart. She was fined 237 dollars and appeals the conviction.
