The Aiken Hunt Meet closes the Aiken Triple Crown with eight events and 80 horses. Gates open at 10 a.m. Post time is 1 p.m. General tickets cost 3 dollars for adults and 1.50 for children under 12, with subscriber and guarantor options offered.
In a letter to the Aiken Standard Council Chairman Carrol H Warner says coverage misrepresented his stance on former auditor Joe W Dunkin. Dunkin resigned after three years as auditor and plans a Monday press conference to present his side.
Charles F. Kneece, Aiken County Board of Education member, filed yesterday to run for the state senate seat now held by Republican Gilbert E. McMillan. Kneece, a Democrat, said he will resign the school board if elected and has long served as a county school administrator. He is a Monetta native in his fourth year on the board, with 12 years as county school superintendent.
Aiken County jury acquitted Robert Hightower on armed robbery and murder charges related to the Holoway deaths. Roosevelt Bryant received a hung verdict, resulting in a mistrial after 10 hours of deliberation. Laney was previously acquitted.
North Augusta City Council unanimously refused a license for an adult bookstore at the former Tastee Freet site on Knox Avenue. Gerald Blanchard of Spartanburg was absent. supporters urged standards alignment and a petition against the venture. The council also approved an SC Electric and Gas franchise with a 1 percent business tax and 2 percent franchise fee.
