Haley rejects reopening Barnwell waste dump for higher class waste
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley denounces legislation to reopen the Barnwell Low-Level Nuclear Waste site, saying she won’t sacrifice future generations for jobs. The plan would move Class A waste to Utah’s Clive Containerized Waste Facility, while Barnwell leaks tritium into groundwater and a creek feeding the Savannah River. Haley emphasizes economic need must not justify dangerous disposal.

Coroner sues County Council over body removal control
Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton sues the County Council and officials to block what he calls improper interference with his office. The 81 page complaint filed Wednesday at the courthouse names Aiken County County Council and County Administrator Clay Killian as defendants and seeks to prevent forced use of procurement to hire deputies for body removal. Carlton retains attorney Sandy Senn. The suit notes a clash over whether the county can direct procurement instead of allowing Carlton to select deputies. The county procurement division had issued a bid for body removal in 2013, allegedly not following Carlton’s rules for body removal. The defendants have 30 days to answer.
