Flagstar debt swap leaves investors with paper loss

Spartanburg resident John Clayton saw his $66 000 Flagstar investment dwindle to about $5 000 as the debt to equity restructuring gives holders 95 percent of the company to the new owners. Shares trade near 69 cents after a high of $23, with 12 000 other common stockholders facing near zero value. Flagstar, owning Denny's and other chains, was saddled by a 1989 leveraged buyout and now carries about $2.1 billion in debt under KKR and Coniston Partners histories.

Right to work bill faces delay in South Carolina

A House committee deferred a vote on a right-to-work proposal that would give regulators and workers leverage against employers with unions. BellSouth urged delay over a mandatory voluntary dues provision, citing uncertainty over voluntary union dues. The Communications Workers of America voiced concerns that the bill strengthens prohibitions on unions collecting dues from nonmembers.

Hate crime bills face likely expansion and obstacles

A South Carolina Senate subcommittee may not vote on two hate crime bills this month as it weighs adding gender and sexual orientation protections. Bill 37 would shield victims based on gender or sexual orientation and was praised by a gay advocate after a Myrtle Beach assault. Government lawyers warned adding protections could clog courts and broaden abuse law to include rape or pedophiles.
