Radio signals battle pits Christian, public broadcasters in Maryland region

WJTM FM Braddock Heights was taken over by WYPR FM, an NPR affiliate, prompting complaints from congressmen and listeners. The shift highlights the scramble for noncommercial frequencies as NPR affiliates and religious broadcasters vie for scarce 88.1 to 91.9 megahertz licenses amid funds gaps for smaller college stations. WYPR's purchase of WJTM from Joy Public Broadcasting, brokered with Public Radio Capital, underscores broader market competition and licensing tactics.
