Judge recuses from murder charge dismissal bid in 1969 riots

York County chief judge and the local bench recused from ruling on whether to drop murder charges against Stephen Freeland and Leon Wright in the killing of Officer Henry Schaad during 1969 race riots. Freeland’s attorney argues long delays impair his defense. Freeland, 50, and Wright, 53, plead not guilty. Schaad, 22, died two weeks after being struck in an armored car attack. Arrests followed five months after nine white men were charged in the murder of a black woman during the riots.

The Supreme Court declined to review Kenneth Curtis's challenge to a 1999 South Carolina law making urine sales illegal. Curtis, who moved his Privacy Protection Services to North Carolina, sold drug free urine for 69 dollars with warming gear, arguing the law infringed interstate commerce and free expression. The court noted safety in the workplace outweighs Curtis's business interests.
