Power Outage Delays Aiken Standard Edition

Aiken Standard reports a power outage hit the plant shortly after midnight, delaying today's edition. Crews from South Carolina Electric and Gas Co. restored power shortly after dawn and the building’s telephone system was disrupted, causing inconvenience to readers and customers.

Strong Winds and Rain Sweep CSRA Night

Strong winds 20 to 30 mph and scattered rain swept the CSRA overnight. Rain totaled about 0.1 inch at Bush Field. hail reported in parts of Trenton. Edgefield under thunderstorm advisory until 4 a.m. Winds to continue, then ease. Friday forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and showers. A power outage in Aiken blamed on a renegade squirrel caused about 600 SCE&G customers to lose power briefly while rerouting.

1950 SRS Jobs To Be Cut At Savannah River Site

The Department of Energy announced a plan to cut 1 950 positions at the Savannah River Site by September 30 1997 with 820 already eliminated by then through attrition and about 30 federal workers to be let go. DOE spokesman Bill Taylor said certain disciplines will be targeted to preserve critical skills while others are cut. Secretary Hazel O Leary planned a briefing on the 1997 budget at Aiken Technical College with SRS budget details to follow.

Retired Engineer Turns Painter Finds Art Is Much More Than Hobby
