AP reports a new Senate map adds a 12th majority black district and strengthens black representation across Pee Dee and Low country areas. Incumbents may face each other in two districts next year to satisfy one person one vote while remaining compact. The plan spans Chesterfield to Darlington and parts of Dillon and Florence counties, plus a coastal stretch from Charleston to Horry becoming more heavily black.

Researchers Track Snakes in St Patrick Day Field Hunt
At Savannah River Site researchers and University of Georgia scientists held the first official St. Patrick’s Day hunt for scarlet kingsnakes. About 11 snakes of seven species were captured, tagged with microchips, and released for recapture tracking.

Women Outvoted Men in Aiken County Election Data
Election Commission figures show Aiken County whites outvoted blacks 7 to 1 and women were the majority of voters by about 1,400 more than men in last November's general election. Turnout rose by over 5,000 from 1990, with 33,929 of 56,074 registered voting. Denton Johnson notes women led in all 46 counties. Hampton led with 77 percent turnout. Lexington followed at 71 percent.
