Stevens Saddles Winners in Aiken Trials Five Race Summary

Trainer Ron Stevens won three of six Aiken Trials after a cold rain crowd of about 2,000 at the Aiken Training Track. Dish It Out captured The Gaver Trophy in 23 3-5 seconds, Chief Protocol won The Post Trophy, and Zigzippity took The von Stade Trophy with a 48 second half mile. Dogwood Stable scored two wins as Stevens faced a virus that scratched horses and reduced fields.

Legislators Seek Stricter Controls On Video Poker

Rep. Charles R. Sharpe and Rep. Thomas E. Huffled lawmakers Wednesday introducing bills on video poker. Huff paired his bill with liquor tax changes to offset potential revenue losses from gambling expansion. Sharpe would let local governments regulate operating hours and penalties, up to 200 in fines or 30 days jail per offense. Huff proposed a public referendum on outlawing electronic gambling and raising liquor and beer taxes to replace revenue. Current annual video poker revenue exceeds 29 million, projected to 40 million next year and 70 million by 1995.

Snowbound Venture Strands Four Students in Blizzard

Four Clemson University students and companions were among hikers stranded in the Appalachians during the Blizzard of 93. Tim Anderson Jason Waters from Aiken High School Tim Smith of Florida and Chuck Otosun of Georgia faced two feet of snow after planning eight inches. They cut the hike after realizing the weather was far worse than expected.
