Aiken County Residents Plead for Action on Drug Problems

A group of about a dozen homeowners near the city edge addressed the County Council Tuesday night urging steps to remove drug dealers and users from McCormick and Ravenel streets intersecting Hampton Avenue. They described fear in their homes as dealers operate late, with gambling and disorder and safety concerns for children. Councilman Willar Hightower noted the area lies outside city limits, though close to the Aiken DPS. Barnwell said he discussed the issue with Sheriff Carrol Heath.

Panel Approves Reform Bill in South Carolina House

The House Judiciary Committee voted 20-2 to send a Campbell reform bill to the full House. It would ask voters in November to consolidate state agencies into 15 Cabinet departments with governors appointing the heads starting in 1995.
