Women firefighters push to broaden all male image post 9 11
New York women say the September 11 tragedy reinforced a male stereotype in firefighting. Only 28 of 11,400 New York City firefighters are women, and fewer than 1 in 600 recruits since 9/11 have been female. Leaders urge stricter recruiting, mentoring, and revised fitness tests to widen access. Minneapolis cites a 16 percent female force due to a tailored test and training.
