John and Mo Empie, retirees from Minnesota and Florida, found Aiken after a brochure set them on the path. Their first visit featured acts of local kindness from LeRoy and Anna Bruce and support from Harold Robinson at AAMCO, with later help from Clint Moses at a Holiday Inn Express. The couple bought a home in Woodside Plantation on December 8, 2004, and moved in February 2005, citing horses and people as the reasons they relocated.
