Watkins questions cleanup cost for nuclear weapons sites

Energy Secretary James D. Watkins told a Senate budget subcommittee that the $65 to $100 billion estimate for cleaning up 16 major weapons plants may be excessive. He said the department could do the job for less, criticizing high cost items and proposing a plan to minimize expenses while possibly leaving some contaminants until later. The GAO has pegged costs above $100 billion, and the 21 year projection previously cited was $81 billion. Watkins aims to restore credibility amid criticism of management and safety oversight.
