Early Spartanburg slaves linked to Walnut Grove plantation
Robert Nelly and Phillis are among the area’s oldest enslaved people tied to Walnut Grove Plantation built by Charles Moore in 1765. Their names appear in Moore’s 1798 will as part of Spartanburg County’s earliest Black history, with memory and landmarks largely lost to time.
