Vale’s Montmorenci: A Frenchman’s Eden in Aiken County
De Caradeuc named the vale Montmorenci after his Paris duchy and built a 500 acre plantation in Montmorenci, Cedar Creek headwaters. He dammed a stream to make a lake with waterfalls, planted European vineyards, and lived there with his wife and two children for 30 years before moving to Charleston. The estate changed hands in 1870 to Augustus Ruxton, then 1873 to James M. Buchanan, and later attracted Henry Dibble seeking health benefits of the medicinal environment around the lake.
