Police investigate a morning shooting in downtown Columbia that killed 75 year old Frank Kelly and 73 year old customer Leon Poole. Another barber, Kendrick Davis, was wounded in the neck and called 911. A gunman allegedly targeted the shop during a robbery.
McCormick and Allendale counties prison guards were charged this week with smuggling drugs to inmates. Petro Jamane Stokes, 24, of Lincolnton Georgia, faces official misconduct possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and contraband law violations. David Dopson of Walterboro faces possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and trafficking in cocaine. Stokes served at McCormick Correctional Institution and Dopson at Allendale.

A Columbia watchdog group says the Savannah River Site may become an interim storage option for commercial spent fuel as no geologic repository will be ready by 1998. The Senate panel backed a bill allowing emergency interim storage, with SRS and the Chem Nuclear facility in Barnwell named as front line possibilities.
Educators in Aiken breathe relief as a continuing resolution in Washington delays Title I cuts. The plan could still slash up to 17.1 percent if proposals proceed, risking $520,595 from Aiken Title I programs without a budget compromise.
As the Trials countdown nears 24 hours, thousands plan to attend by car. With 15,000 expected at the mile-long oval, parking will be directed to two nearby locations near the track, per Aiken Jaycees.
Donnie Wakefield announces entry points for Aiken Trials with reserved infield parking in row one at Audubon Drive and Powderhouse Road and general parking at Mead Avenue and Two Notch Road. Gates open 10 a.m. and close 1 p.m. no re-entry until after the final race. Two Notch Road will be closed from Audubon Drive to the Aiken area.
More than 300 horses mainly two and three year olds are stabled at the Aiken Training Track for winter training. About 30 horses are set to race in Saturday's Aiken Trials. Trainer Ron Stevens has saddled 12 winners in the last four Trials and has around 30 horses in training for Dogwood Stable and other owners.
Stevens has eight horses in the Trials with three by Summer Squall Squall Watch including Storm Song and an unnamed filly. Squall Watch and others will race in The Gaver Trophy and The Coward Trophy while Jump The Shadow enters The City of Aiken Cup. BSB Bloodstock owns the unnamed colt and filly. Spring Hill Farm runs Stormin Fever. Steve Penrod trains 30 horses including two unnamed Devil's Bay foals. Hill n' Dale Farm, 25 horses, will race Cafe Mocha in The Gaver Trophy and Rivers' Rise in
Republican and Democrat candidates post qualifying fees at 1 percent of office term salaries. Qualifying ends March 30 with primaries set for June 11, under the state Election Commission. Local entries include incumbents and challengers for sheriff, coroner, clerk of court, probate judge, treasurer, auditor, registrar and county council seats.
