The Senate faces a rush decision on a bill to override an Labor Department deadline forcing states to hire adult drivers by April 1. South Carolina districts like Aiken could be affected though officials caution against premature expectations. Congressional action hinges on Senate scheduling after the House passed the measure.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson claimed victory in South Carolina precinct caucuses in Columbia. Speaking at Greenville Technical College, he urged involvement in state politics and urged supporters to run for governor or senate. He framed the wins as steps in a campaign of hope and noted national primary momentum.
In Ai ken County Jackson led with 140 percent of delegates, supported by 57 of 59 precincts. Gore trailed with 30 delegates as Jackson’s organization drew stronger Black participation and higher name ID. County caucuses and the March 28 county convention at USC Aiken set stage for the state and national delegate counts.
Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel chief Dr Richard J Stemper said the firm would not bid to operate the Savannah River Plant unless the Price Anderon Act or a similar liability shield is reenacted. He spoke at USC Aiken as SRP contract plans were outlined noting Du Pont’s earlier decision not to renew.

Ruth Siegler of the SC Commission on Aging says the states elderly population is rising fast with 345,900 aged 65 plus in 1985. By 2014 to 2030 one in four residents will be 39 or older, while only 2.8 percent live in nursing homes. The state spends about 101 million yearly on elderly programs.
