Scott Hunter reports the 34th annual Aiken Trials will feature 10 Thoroughbred races at Two Notch Road. Track manager Alan Coward notes recent rain has tightened the clay-sand mix, creating near ideal conditions for the 2 p.m. post time.
A schedule of events for March including the Triple Crown races on March 13 at Aiken Trials with young thoroughbreds. March 19 Horse Show in Hitchcock Woods. March 20 Aiken Steeplechase. March 27 Lan cers Tournament. Harness Races at Aiken Mile Track. Triple Crown Ball at Hounds Lake. Polo every weekend. Tickets vary by event with benefits for Jaycees, Sertoma Club, American Cancer Society, and local chamber.
President Ford campaigned in Illinois denying any Watergate stain on his administration. He sought to undercut Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter, while Reagan and Carter pressed foreign policy critiques. Ford promised reporters no connection to Watergate and noted Democratic Congress absolved him.
The House approved a 1.5 billion aid bill to help Alaska and Atlantic Coast states cope with accelerated offshore oil and gas leasing. The plan funds five years of support and guarantees up to 200 million dollars in state bonds annually. Senate action mirrors the measure.
In New York City mid Manhattan businesses will see deliveries fall from three to two daily. Chase Manhattan Bank said it will continue collecting its own mail. Tickets for the Aiken Trials are on sale at the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce for 1.50 through 7 PM tonight. Gate price is 2. Triple Crown Ball ticket holders must pick up by next Saturday at the Chamber. after that they go to the waiting list.
In Beirut President Suleiman Franjieh rejects a resignation amid a military takeover as fighting erupts in the downtown hotel district leaving deaths. Rebels seize another army garrison near Beirut while clashes spread toward Sidon 25 miles away.
Irene K. Rudnick announces bid for re election to the D C House of Representatives District 85 while County Treasurer Frank Thomas says he will not seek another term health reasons cited. Filing deadline is noon March 22 with the Aiken County Democratic Party Chair or Rudnick's office at 225 Park Ave.
A former North Augusta mayoral candidate is listed on the criminal court docket for the two week term of General Sessions Court in Ai ken County. Judge Rodney Peeples will preside first week with Judge Clyde Eltz roth second week. Robert Walker Tinsley of North Augusta faces six counts of receiving stolen goods among about 90 cases. The docket also includes murder cases, one linked to the death of a common law wife and another to the death of a girlfriend.
Area industries report stronger activity and optimism for the year. United Merchants Bath Mill, Graniteville Co, Riege Textile, Owens-Corning Fiberglas, Harvey Hubbell, Kimberly-Clark and LeGrande's Clothing all note higher demand, growing employment, and plans to sustain gains through year end.
