With spring in the air and the Triple Crown near, Aiken residents think about horses and their impact. Tomorrow the Aiken Standard publishes its 27th annual Triple Crown edition, included in the Wednesday paper.
Three Aiken County teens missing since Sunday were found Monday morning on a small Savannah River island about a mile and half downstream from Silver Bluff Boat Landing. Ernest F Shumpert III 17 Garrett Swearingen 18 and a 16 year old juvenile launched a boat at about 5 pm Sunday and rode the current until located. They were not hospitalized and were in good condition. North Augusta voters head to GOP mayor and council primary polls close at 7 pm.
Notice of deaths includes Cecelia F Butler and Esther Dunbar Clay in Aiken and Myrtle Marquis Salley in Aiken with Cecil Clarence Cavaker, Hugh R Jenkins of Greensboro and George L Williams of Bamberg also listed as deceased.
Last year the Aiken events drew tens of thousands with record attendance at the Harness Race and steeplechase. The 54th Aiken Trials opened the Triple Crown as trainers Stevens Mitchell shared wins in early legs. Attendance exceeded 165000 across the event with 25000 at the Steeplechase. Stevens saddled two wins including Live Your Best and Storm in Fever. Mitchell added wins for Wild Gambler and Ten to Zen. Graves and Cluff also won trials.
Pat Lakey, longtime operator of Pat's on Richland Avenue, retires after more than 17 years in the kitchen and passes the business to her nephew Eric Kitchings. She and husband Charles have long worked in family ventures and value a friendly, affordable restaurant atmosphere.
A nine month old girl, Jacquelyn Allyse Blackmon, died in a mobile home fire at 852 Good Springs Road in Vaucluse. Firefighters found two mobile homes ablaze, with the fire spreading to pallets and old cars, injuring no one else severely. The fire, ruled accidental and possibly started by a malfunctioning heat wel, required about two hours to extinguish.
The Aiken County Legislative Delegation voted for a work session to explore shifting road paving duties from the Transportation Committee to the County Council. Sen. Tommy Moore will arrange talks with the delegation road committee, county Transportation Committee, and County Council.
At the Savannah River Site, Wackenhut Services employees voted 101 to 38 against joining the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers after two days of balloting. About 139 of 142 eligible workers participated, with management praising the decision and noting unity for excellence amid a dissension sparked by the bid.
