Mikhail Gorbachev quickly named to head funeral arrangements and poised to succeed, signaling a new generation in power amid resumed Geneva arms talks.
Soviet leaders move quickly after Chernenko’s death with Mikhail Gorbachev named to run the commission for his funeral. The 73 year old Chernenko died at 7:20 p.m. after a grave illness, leaving no immediate successor named.
