A twelve hour rescue effort at a Southeast Kentucky mine ended with the bodies of all 15 miners found. Nine died instantly from a methane gas blast on Tuesday, while six others suffocated trying to erect an air light barricade against the gas.
Washington AP reports that Richard Nixon says he did not personally pick wiretap targets early in his presidency. He claims he approved an overall 1969 wiretap program but left specific targets to Henry Kissinger. Deposition due to be filed in court today.
Be irut Lebanon AP reports renegade Moslem soldiers seized a major northern army garrison and a border outpost amid a revolt that could trigger civil war. Unconfirmed word spoke of a second garrison attack and President Suleiman Franjieh fearing loyal officers may stage a coup to stop the army’s disintegration.
Chopper pilot Lt Ho Kim Hai, 30, who stole a helicopter, abducted his family, and fled to Thailand cites fear of return to a Communist country. He spoke in Chantaburi of his relief at landing and his desire to stay.
Democrats on the Joint Economic Committee say President Ford’s proposed 394 billion budget risks recession and fails to curb inflation or create jobs. They urge a 412 to 418 billion outlay in fiscal 1977 with 1 million emergency jobs and wage price controls. The new year starts October 1.
