Dig reveals more aspects of past at S C plantation
At Hampton Plantation State Historic Site archaeologists and about 60 volunteers continue a three year dig started with federal stimulus funds. They uncovered slave residence foundations and 1700s artifacts including a teapot and a coin likely used as jewelry. The project supports history of the Harry Rutledge family estate and slave life on the plantation near the Santee River.
