Courts Corps will be key in water fight

The three states Georgia Florida and Alabama face a renewed dispute as tri state water talks collapse and federal courts take a lead role. Eight lawsuits remain active and a new short term operations plan from the Army Corps of Engineers and Fish and Wildlife Service could trigger renewed legal maneuvering. Governors Perdue Crist and Riley failed to reach a compromise after mediation by Dirk Kempthorne, with Georgia seeking more water from the Apalachicola Chattahoochee Flint basins and Florida and Alabama arguing downstream harms. The Corps plans to replace the June 1 expiry arrangement and rewrite long term manuals guiding river allocations as drought deepens.

Second James Brown trustee faces contempt threat in estate case

Judge Jack Early scolded former adviser Buddy Dallas for withholding trust records and hinted at willful contempt, as five Brown children push to invalidate the will over alleged charitable trusts. Dallas testified a longtime adviser quit last July, replaced by attorney Bill Hammond, but Dallas concealed the appointment. The case involves disputed heirs and tests for potential biological relations to James Brown, who died in 2006.
