Kmart to close six South Carolina stores in bankruptcy plan

Chief executive Chuck Conaway said Kmart will close six South Carolina stores in Greenville Charleston Greer Simpsonville Myrtle Beach and Spartanburg as part of its reorganizational effort. Local employees learned of Aiken’s status Friday morning with about 800 workers, some with 20 years tenure, noting the store will stay open pending court approval. The closures aim to boost cash flow to about 550 million in 2002 and 45 million annually thereafter, while the retailer focuses on remaining stores and balance-sheet cleanup. Some customers welcomed the option, while others lamented longer lines elsewhere and Blue Light Specials.
