North town had about an hour of power loss with dark traffic lights while a downtown church district saw about 900 customers lose power briefly. Teen dies in wreck near US 1 and I-20
A 19 year old Batesburg resident Cherri Nicole Wise died after a car swerved to avoid a deer on US 1 near I-20 in Aiken County. Driver Felicia West 22 of Leesville lost control and flipped the vehicle at 3 45 a m. Two other passengers Connie Otts 19 and Shelly Irvin 18 were injured with Wise pronounced dead at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Deer cause many crashes in the state and motorists are urged to watch for wildlife.

Edisto River Project Aims to Guide Aiken County Growth
Edisto River's high winter levels were discussed at the Aiken County Open Land Trust meeting held at Holley House. Bill Marshall of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources outlined the Edisto River Basin Project, a decade-long citizen based effort to balance growth with river and watershed stewardship across the 12 county basin that includes Aiken. The river, feeding about 40 percent of Aiken's drinking water and a third of county wells, supports a 250000 resident, rural area with unemployment concerns driving development priorities. The project builds a detailed data base and GIS to guide resource management, with a 15 member expert committee tackling agriculture forestry and tourism among other topics.
