Howard Middle School seventh graders painted a 10 282 square foot world map on outdoor basketball courts claiming the largest map in the world. The project began after teacher Glenn Anderson learned of a larger two court map in Tempe Arizona.
A federal jury in Columbia convicted two state legislators, B J Gordon and Larry Blanding, after a 99 minute trial of conspiring to violate the Hobbs Act and bribery related to a scheme to legalize betting on horse and dog racing. Each faced multiple counts and both remain free pending sentencing. The verdict ends their House seats as they await further action.
The United States and allied nations celebrate mass homecomings as about 4 000 American GIs and 1 800 Kuwaitis are released from captivity or return from the Persian Gulf. Crowds greet arriving troops at airports across the country while Gen Schwarzkopf vows quick pullout and Cheney cites a 5 000 daily departure pace. Most region troops are expected home by July Fourth.
Secretary of State James A. Baker III began a regional peace probe in Saudi Arabia seeking signs of willingness to move toward peace with Israel. He met with King Fahd and Prince Saud Saud al-Fahd to align an emerging Arab security force with U S plans and planned talks in Kuwait City with Crown Prince Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah.
