The Aiken Trials attract about 15,000 fans and the Aiken Spring Steeplechase draws 30,000. Rain last year reduced attendance at the Trials to around 1,000. This year forecasters expect sunny skies and temperatures from 65 to 71. See RACE, page 12A.
Festival of Horses celebrated "The Golden Age of Aiken" with about 400 spectators daily. Organizer Jane Gunnell credited local stable owners and area residents for boosting awareness of horses and their economic impact, including attracti ng high end real estate. The event featured dog races and positive feedback, though Gunnell may not repeat it next year due to other commitments.
The coroner’s office awaits dental records from the Aiken County Sheriff to ID skeletal remains found in Hitchcock Woods last month. Officials say records are from a 1992 missing person case and not easily accessible, with DNA testing possible after a Monday meeting with the forensic team. The family would be informed if identification is confirmed.
Strong gusts up to 30 mph knocked limbs from trees across the county, causing scattered power outages and hazardous driving on debris littered roads. Police and fire crews handled downed lines and alarms. a storage building roof blew off near Whiskey Road and Pine Log Road.
Cedar Creek Church on Banks Mill Road hosts Celebrate Recovery meetings to help CSRA residents overcome addictions. The program founded by Rick Warren and John Baker operates in 11 countries with 32 denominations. Since January 100 people have attended, with Tuesday small groups and Friday 6 9 p.m. dinners and worship, plus gender separated groups for chemically dependent and codependency issues.
