Contenders for Aiken County Chair Rise to Six

The race for the vacant Aiken County Council chair grew to five contenders on Monday and could reach six today. Republican filings include James Bland Fay Hatcher Eddie Butler Ronnie Young and W Russ Ferrara. Democrat Mike Toole expected to file today. The primary deadline closes at noon with primaries set for the 17th and a general election on June 7. Toole previously served District 5 on the council and is a Belvedere heating and air business owner. Bland, a first term council member and former physician, won District 2 in 1990 by a narrow margin.

Clinton Defends Hillary in Whitewater Affair Storm

Park Boosts North Side With Summit Park Industrial Center

Shaws Creek Properties plans an 850 acre Summit Park north of Rutland Drive to spur growth in Aiken. A 49 acre tract will serve as one of three access points as developers seek federal or state grants for a road. The plan aims to create 2000 to 3200 jobs in industrial and service sectors, with access via Rutland Drive S C 19 and Reynolds Pond Road. City leaders back the project as a remedy for north south growth disparity and SRS dependence.

Indicted Former Mayor Shaw Faces Multiple Federal Charges

Two Children Injured In Barnwell Ave House Fire

Fire on Barnwell Avenue left a 5-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl with smoke inhalation. Their mother Deborah Creech faces possible criminal charges as police investigate, with the 2-year-old airlifted in critical condition and the 5-year-old observed at a regional hospital.

Aiken Void On State Heart Map

Aiken is viewed as a void on South Carolina’s heart care map as DHEC permits nine open heart hospitals statewide. Grand Strand Hospital in Myrtle Beach won a Certificate of Need to perform the procedure, marking the 10th facility. The state plan requires a 90 minute drive to an open heart hospital to avoid duplication.
