Bush Buchanan Duel Echoes in South Carolina Primary

In South Carolina Bush won with 67 percent of the vote as Buchanan trailed with 27 percent and Duke at 7 percent. In Aiken County Bush led 4,370 to 2,046 with Duke at 529 and Lee at 65 votes. Duke and Buchanan framed the result as a partial anti Bush showing amid statewide turnout near 1,700 votes short of 1988.

Clinton wins South Carolina presidential primary big

Gov. Bill Clinton easily wins South Carolina with 67 766 votes 64 percent as Tsongas follows with 18 777 votes 17 percent. Clinton gains momentum for Super Tuesday with 38 delegates vs Tsongas five if totals hold. Uncommitted and Brown trail. Harkin near six percent.

Postal Experiment Improves Aiken Mail Delivery

A two week postal experiment yields earlier Augusta mail and added Aiken Post Office staff. Postmaster Don Dulaney reports 2 30 a.m. arrivals from Augusta replacing 4 45 a.m. starts and notes overall faster doorstep delivery.

Aiken Trials Mark 50th Running Ahead of Spring

The 50th Aiken Trials will open gates at 11 a.m. with post time at 2 p.m. at the Aiken Training Center on Two Notch Road. The event showcases 2 and 3 year old horses as a preview for races in other states. General admission tickets cost 4 dollars in advance and 5 dollars on race day, with free entry for children under 12. Parking is 5 dollars.

Baptist Alliance Drops Southern Baptist Name

The moderate offshoot of the Southern Baptist Convention renamed itself The Alliance of Baptists at its fifth annual meeting in Charlotte. About 400 members voted unanimously to drop Southern from the title to signal separation and broaden fellowship with other Christian groups. Ann Quattlebaum of Greenville, SC, said the move affirms more communion, while plans to pursue a merger with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship continue.
