President Nixon today urged new limits on campaign financing and bans on dirty tricks while expressing doubt that any law can guarantee absolute electoral integrity. He endorsed reforms but opposed some ideas that would overhaul American elections.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported February unemployment at 5.2 percent with 4.7 million unemployed and total employment at 90.5 million, despite the energy crunch.
The Senate passes a bill raising the federal minimum wage from 1.60 to 2.20 an hour for about 96 million workers. Sponsors express hope President Nixon may sign or a veto override could succeed, following Nixon's veto of a near identical 1973 measure sustained by the House by 23 votes.
Washington AP Federal energy officials say year round Daylight Saving Time may save fuel in the energy crisis though a final verdict is pending. Energy chief William E Simon estimated last January that winter savings could reach 150000 barrels of oil daily due to the resumption of Daylight Saving Time on Jan 6. Simon and his experts admit no reliable measure exists yet but say some saving is plausible and there is no apparent rise in predawn traffic fatalities.
Palestinian state of tension widens as Israeli and Syrian forces exchange antitank fire along the Golan Heights cease fire line. Damascus reportedly warned of resuming hostilities while Israel returned fire from Tel Marai central sector. Washington cautioned Israel amid Syria's battle-threat claim reported by Maariv.
A new group calling itself Americans for Justice claimed responsibility for bombing an empty Shell storage tank and threatens more violence if gas prices are not lowered. The letter asks for public publication in the San Francisco Chronicle and demands free gasoline or heating oil for the poor over 65 and lower prices for all Californians, with a 48 hour response window.
