Spirituals Society Captivates Charleston Audience at Aiken
The Society for the Preservation of Spirituals from Charleston captivated a full house at the Aiken Theatre on Saturday showing a plantation era program. Major Alfred Huger introduced the group and explained the sacred aims of preserving old negro spirituals as members from local aristocratic families joined in signing and clapping during eighteen performances. A reception by Miss Mazarine Parker followed with further dialect stories and more spirituals, under the Aiken Civic League for a winter benefit.
