Murder trial starts Monday in Aiken County

Arnold executed for racially motivated killing in South Carolina

Arnold, 43, was executed by lethal injection at 6 15 p m on Friday for the 1978 racially motivated torture and murder of Betty Gardner on St Helena Island. He and his cousin John Plath were white perpetrators who carved KKK initials into the victim. Arnold maintained innocence and cited a final statement referencing Eisenhower. This marks the 14th execution in South Carolina since 1977 and the second for killing a black person.
