Aiken celebrates Founders Day noting Black leaders’ roles
The 2015 Aiken Standard account traces founders like Lee and Hayne born enslaved in 1824 and 1830 who rose as Union soldiers, early Black judges, and postmasters amid Reconstruction. It recalls Hamburg Massacre violence and calls for a 2018 Founders Day in Aiken County with school collaboration and district representation.
