The Aiken Standard will publish its 14th annual Triple Crown horse edition this Friday, a 80 page feature covering horses from thoroughbreds to Arabians. It lists events in March the Aiken Trials on March 17 at 2 p.m., Aiken Sulky Races on March 31 at 2 p.m., with ticket prices and sponsors for each event.
Four or five cars inside the Timmerman lot suffered damage after a fire was discovered by a sheriff's deputy. About 38 firefighters helped extinguish the blaze. The cause remains under investigation.
Saluda County lawyer Rep. Larry E. Gentry D Saluda has announced plans to seek re election to the South Carolina House from District 39. He has served since 1978 and sits on the Judiciary Rules and Joint Rural Development committees.

Dr. Robert Paskel says state officials found renovating Aiken Elementary unfeasible at any cost. City Council debated legal action to question the school board as the district closed Aiken and Laurens Street schools and planned a Hitchcock Parkway facility.
Frieda Walker, already financial director, has assumed duties as acting tax collector after a $2699 shortfall surfaced during an October delinquent tax sale audit. County Administrator W Scott Barnes praised her six years of service and said records will be brought into compliance while staffing levels may be reassessed after the next tax sale.
Aiken County taxpayers must pay real estate and personal property taxes excluding motor vehicles by March 15. If unpaid by March 14 at 5 p.m., a 5 percent penalty is added, with penalties rising above 25 percent by August and a property sale notice to follow in October.
Rep. Butler Derrick plans a surprise 11 30 a m press conference in Washington to endorse John Glenn for president. The endorsement, coming after Sen. Hollings quit the Democratic primary, cements Derrick's view of Glenn as a viable moderate choice for South Carolinians.
