Penalty for personal property tax made mandatory in SC

South Carolina Attorney General concludes the 10 percent penalty for failing to declare personal property items is mandatory. The ruling reverses county auditor Williams who waived the penalty this year amid confusion over the statute text. The opinion clarifies that may and shall can be interchangeable to serve public interests.

Triple Crown Road Race Draws Nationwide Runners

Runners of all sizes competed in Aiken for the second annual Triple Crown event with a three mile and a 10 mile race. Robert Varsha from Atlanta won the 10 mile in 50 13, Paul from Hartsville won the three mile in 15 20, and local and out of town athletes filled the top places.

Scrambled eggs, flowers, and friendly rows at Rotary Night

Julia Moore recalls fixing scrambled eggs for her grandson Strom Thurmond who asked for the recipe. Herbert Rudnick doubts attending the Triple Crown races. Rotary Ladies Night featured a low budget entertainment by the 4 P's and a quip about rank. The H Odell Weeks center hosted the Triple Crown Road Race and Dixie Youth signups with basketball and pool activities ongoing.

Aiken Events This Month Include Races and Polo

This month in Aiken features the Triple Crown races on March 1 at 2 p.m. with general admission $2.50 at the gate and $2 in advance to benefit the American Cancer Society, the March 17 Woods Horse Show at Hitchcock Woods starting 9 a.m. with $5 per car, the March 18 36th Aiken Trials at 2 p.m. sponsored by Aiken Jaycees with tickets $2 in advance or $2.50 at the gate, and the March 25 Aiken Hunt Meet (Steeplechase) with $2.50 in advance and $3 at the gate. Subscriber rail parking $25 for four, guarantors tent party $125 for four. Ser toma Club sponsors polo Sundays at 3 p.m. at Whitney Field. The Aiken Thoroughbred Hall of Fame is open daily except Mondays from 2-5 p.m. at Hopeland Gardens on Whiskey Road.

Aiken County Council Debates 189674 Dollar Agenda

The Aiken County Council meets at 7 p.m. at the county office complex on Richland Avenue to consider ordinances and resolutions totaling about 189 674 dollars. Chair Carroll H. Warner questions the cost and demands full accountability on the appropriations. Readings include health agency funds 8200, roads and bridges 70000, refuse collection 13100, and SC Electric and Gas 23329.24 with additional resolutions for EMS 3000, tax assessor 2795, central fuel operations 12250, and motor grader purchases 57000 along with five old business items and four public hearings.
