Social Security benefits to be equalized for men and women
A. Duane Day explains changes in the Social Security law that will remove earnings-based differences between men and women over three years. Previously, a 65 year old woman with max earnings could receive about 269 dollars monthly versus 259 for a man with identical earnings. The new rules let men drop additional low-earning years: one for those turning 62 in 1973, two in 1974, and three in 1975. Non disabled widowers at age 60 will also gain benefits, aligning with widows by 1975.
