Former KGB Major Claims Two Inside State Dept Sources
Victor Sheymov, ex KGB major and cyber expert, told a Washington news conference that in the late 1970s the Soviet Union had two sources inside the State Department able to deliver secret information on U.S. policy and negotiating positions. He cited a 1979 trip to Poland where a KGB chief allegedly showed a cable about seeking data on how to assassinate Pope John Paul II, though he offered few specifics and has since become an American citizen. He also said the CIA knew of his defection and that he published a book about his experiences while seeking a publisher, and he handed out business cards under the name Victor Orlov.
