Tuition Waivers Could Be Increased At S C Colleges

South Carolina colleges may double tuition waivers from 2 to 4 percent of undergraduates with new limits extending to technical colleges and out of state students. The measure targets better academic achievement, with restrictions proposed on athletic waivers. Data show 1988 89 waivers totaled 473 901 for 600 students, athletes receiving 519 162 of the total. The Commission on Higher Education urged lawmakers to include the change in the budget bill as it seeks to reward strong academics over athletics.
