Unemployment Rate Dips as Earnings Surpass Inflation

The February jobless rate fell from 5.9 to 5.7 percent with 5.4 million unemployed after seasonal adjustment. Average weekly earnings rose to $130.27, up 35 cents, marking a 6.2 percent year over year gain despite a 3.4 percent rise in consumer prices.

Six Year Old Rescued After 27 Foot Plunge

In El Monte California a 6-year-old boy Anthony Bernardino was rescued after spending nearly seven hours trapped 27 feet underground. A rescue worker carried him to safety then he was airlifted to a medical center in good condition. He spoke to his parents and asked about his brother Jimmy as he was wheeled away.

Aspiring Senators In For Confusing Time In South Carolina

Aiken County may lose one of its two Senate seats under Plan A a reapportionment proposal the State Election Commission says would take effect if Senate filing opens Monday. Plan B could also be struck by a federal panel leaving the current 46 seats unless a new plan is approved. Filing runs from noon Monday to March 7 and again until March 20 with candidates filing by party in their county.

Special Court Term Begins March 27 in Aiken County

Aiken County Criminal Court will hold a special one week session starting March 27 due to a heavy docket. Judge Julius B. Ness will hear four murder indictments and cases in grand larceny and receiving stolen goods from January term. The murder docket includes Larry Mitchell and Wayne Smith linked to the shooting death of Mrs. Marge Wood Mitchell at Townsend Division of Graniteville Company.

Conference Panel Gets Home Rule For Aiken County

Three of the four Aiken House members join a Senate House conference committee to resolve differences on the Aiken County home rule bill. House conferees are Reps Marshall Cain Julian Dunbar and John H. Williams. Senate conferees are Sens Michael Laughlin Gilbert McMillan and A J Dooley all from Senate District 7.
