A Wagener man Calvin Gunter aged 70 died from smoke inhalation in a mobile home fire on Cofer Street Friday. Fire officials say the kitchen was the likely origin and a kerosene heater found inside is believed to have caused the blaze. Witnesses noted the mobile home doors were locked, hindering rescue efforts.
In High Point North Carolina a clerk Gregory Kent Reid chased a man who ran from a store with nearly six thousand dollars worth of clothing. He followed to a car and tried to grab items from the back seat but was dragged about 20 feet as the vehicle sped away leaving him scratched and angry.

Former Aiken horse breeder Dr. Robert G. Lucas will plead in U.S. District Court on Monday to charges of perjury and tax evasion for under reporting federal income taxes for 1983 to 1985. IRS and U.S. attorney officials note potential penalties up to nine years in jail and fines totaling $450,000 for all counts. Lucas, former owner of Green Hills Farm, allegedly reported far less than actual receipts, with discrepancies across 1983 1984 and 1985.
