An American tourist named Brian Schwartz, detained for two days during Idi Amin's ban on Americans leaving Uganda, arrived in Nairobi as he was expelled. The U S Embassy confirmed his name but could not provide age or address and gave no explanation for the detention in Kampala.
Nine miners were trapped in the Porter Tunnel of Kocher Coal Co. in Schuylkill County after a three foot wall of water flooded the tunnel. One miner died and three were injured as rescuers dug through timber and debris with little hope of survival. There was no sign of life inside the flooded mine mid day Tuesday.

IRS has turned a 1973 Aiken County ambulance purchase dispute against attorney Howard M. Hickey Jr. to the Justice Department for review. The IRS seeks 13,000 in taxes claiming federal priority over local debts after county bought the paramed system from Thomas Hulfish.
Aiken County Council passed on first reading an ordinance accepting subdivision roads into the county. The action occurred despite opposition from the county attorney and ongoing talks with contractors. The measure heads to further council consideration and potential amendments.
