A Georgia state Senate panel approved a bill to keep Thurmond Lake off state road signs and maps, despite a plea from Stanley Hackett, a former Thurmond aide. Hackett and former senator Herman Talmadge argued the deal linked to a timing arrangement with another reservoir named for Richard B. Russell. Augusta's Tom Allgood noted local opposition and lack of consultation. The bill advances to the Senate Rules Committee for calendar placement.

Savannah River Plant boosts wealth but local school funding remains low per pupil amid concerns over sex education discipline and dropout rates.
The Aiken County Board of Education rejected the state recommended sex education curriculum for grades 6-8. It unanimously approved Me My World My Future from Teen Aid Inc. The program, costed at about 25 thousand dollars next year, was endorsed by the County Comprehensive Health Committee in December.
A National Research Council report warns that large consumption of vitamin, calcium, and fiber supplements can be harmful and adds there is little value in these supplements. It urges Americans to obtain nutrients from a varied diet and to cut dietary fat and alcohol.
The Aiken County Council, at its Tuesday meeting, voted 6-3 to launch a $10,000 fundraising drive to buy Schultz Hill cemetery along U.S. 1 near North Augusta. A motion to use county funds was defeated 54. County Attorney Bell said county money would be illegal for transfer to a coalition. Supporters included Willar HighTower Jr and Rosemary English. opponents included J Allen Brodie Eugene Duckett Eddie Butler Kathy Oweis.
DOE officials call restarting the Savannah River Plant reactors prudent and say a full environmental impact statement is not required because the three reactors were built before NEPA took effect in 1970. The suit by NRDC Greenpeace and the Energy Research Foundation argues NEPA compliance is needed before major federal action. officials expect to announce restart dates in mid March.
