Widener Acquitted Amid Mixed Reactions In Wagener

Charlie Widener the Wagener police chief was acquitted of first degree criminal sexual conduct with a 10 year old girl after a six hour jury deliberation. He left the courthouse via the back door and his wife Edith described the ordeal as a nightmare with no sleep for months. The case arose from allegations that the 57 year old engaged in sex acts with a minor and the indictment was amended to extend the period of alleged events from August 1986 to a multi month span. The defense argued the victim was lying while the prosecution urged the jury to consider the evidence.
